Review: Save The Day is Exactly What You'd Expect From Mariah Carey and Lauryn Hill, and That's Good

When a legend like Mariah Carey says she has an announcement, we all know we will likely not be disappointed. So when Mariah told us that she was going on Good Morning America, we knew something great was coming. We were not let down, as Mariah announced a collaboration with the spectacular Ms. Lauryn Hill.

Upon first listening to the song at midnight on Friday morning, I was a little confused as to where on the track you could hear Ms. Hill. Come to find out, it's more of a sample and you can vaguely hear her vocals on the bridge as they sing "La-la-la" in unison. This was disappointing, as I'm a fan of both MC and LH and was really excited to hear a collaboration between the two legends.

Including the sample of The Fugees' "Killing Me Softly" cover was an amazing decision and, as briefly as they was audible, Lauryn Hill's vocals were a fine addition as well. As previously mentioned, I wish we could've heard more from Hill on the track. She's an amazing artist with a lot to offer musically.

Mariah's vocals were, unsurprisingly, spectacular. She gave us her signature breathy sound and whistle notes along with the belts that we all know and love. The song is also full of the harmonies that really showcase Mariah's abilities as a musician and songwriter. These abilities should come as no surprise, as Mariah will soon be inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame.

Lyrically, the song hits the nail on the head. With lyrics about rebuilding our world, working together, coexisting, and division, Mariah aimed to release a song that would hold relevance in today's world and portray the idea that we have to step up and work together because if we don't, nobody will. Listening to this song and processing the words vocalized to us is moving, to say the least.

As a whole, the song was astounding. Well written and well produced, "Save The Day" was exactly the song this world needed to hear. Mariah has, yet again, given us an amazing track that we can all listen and learn from.
